Champagne Tasting with Morningside Wine School, Edinburgh.

Champagne and afternoon tea are a match made in heaven. The perfect partners to enjoy an exquisite treat, we were delighted to be invited to an Edinburgh Champagne Masterclass by the Morningside Wine School.

Our champagne masterclass was held in Lulu, the fabulous night club at Edinburgh’s ever so stylish Tiger Lily on George Street. The place to see and be seen.

Doug bond, Morningside Wine School. Wine tasting classes Edinburgh. We were warmly welcomed by business partners Laura Hood and Doug Bond who run this successful wine school. Doug has worked in the industry since 2001 and has spent his career selling, teaching and writing about wine and spirits. Laura has spent 8 years in events and marketing.

Our evening began with a little background information on Champagne itself. Champagne originates from the Champagne region of the North East of France. The region is widely known for grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. However, it’s the production of the area’s sparkling white wine that has made it renowned the world over. A sparkling wine can only be called Champagne if it comes from the Champagne region of France.

Accompanied with delicious bite size nibbles carefully selected to compliment five selected champagnes to try, Doug gently guided us through the flavours and essence of each vintage and its ability to match with a wide variety of foods. Our delicious Champagne tasting menu included:

  • Laurent-Perrier 2007 Vintage Champagne – £47
    laurent-perrier.com/en/
  • Lanson Black Label Brut NV Champagne – £25
    lansonchampagne.com
  • Pol Roger Vintage 2009 Blanc de Blancs Champagne – £75 (This was definitely our favourite)

  • Launois Blanc De Noirs Oeil de Perdrix – £30
    champagne-launois.fr/en
  • Jean Moutardier Cuvee Rosee Champagne – £27

Our taste buds were pleasantly tingling by the end of the tasting and we had thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
